8 Styles of Window for Your New Double Glazing

In many cases when we upgrade to have the installation of double glazing, we keep with the same style of window that we had before.  But the reality is that there are lots of styles of window that work with double glazing in Telford – and here are some examples to help inspire your choices.

New Double Glazing

Casement windows

Casement windows are one of the most popular styles of window available and are hinged either at the top or the side.  Sometimes they have one or more hinges that attach it to the frame.  They are also one of the most energy efficient types of windows and their frames can come in uPVC, aluminium or timber.

French casement windows

Traditional casement windows only have one sash or door but with French casement windows, both sides of the window will open.  This means you can open one or both and they swing closed to meet in the centre.  There is often a vertical pole, called a mullion, in the centre to support the windows and ensure a good seal when closed.

Cottage windows

The style of windows that have smaller panes of glass and a charming appearance is often known as cottage windows because they are often seen in cottages as well as properties from the Georgian and Tudor periods.  The modern version is essentially casement windows with styled elements to make them look like cottage windows while still being energy efficient and practical.

Sliding sash windows

Sash windows feature one or two panels and these slide vertically inside the frame to open.  This is a classic of the window world with examples going back to the 1670s when they were invented by an English scientist called Robert Hooke.  They are a popular style in many Victorian and Georgian era properties so when you replace the windows and want to choose windows that look the part in your property, these are a good option.

Tilt and turn windows

Tilt and turn are a very practical style of window where the top of the window opens and tilts inwards from the bottom, where the hinges are located.  You can also swing the window inwards from side hinges so there are different ways to operate the windows.  They are great for letting air into the room and are also easy to clean from inside the house.

Dual turn windows

These windows are based on a sash window but can be completely swung around so what was outside is now inside.  This means they are very easy to clean but also means there are some limits in their use.  They are most commonly seen in timber frames.

Fully reversible

Like dual turn windows, these are ideal for windows that are hard to reach from outside for cleaning purposes.  These windows use a clever hinge technology that lets them spin around on a horizontal axis, so you can access every part of the window.
